1972 Sport Custom Steering Column

Post by zentar »

I know that its been a LONG time since I have been on this site but my son has finally decided he is ready to start driving Grandpas old truck so its time for me and him to get it running. My uncle had power steering put in it before my grandpas passing and its all messed up. Did Ford have power steering in the 1972 Sport Custom and if they did does any one have an idea where I can get the whole setup? Please Help

What exactly is wrong with the PS if it's already been installed? The steering column in my truck was all wore out when I got it so I took it out and rebuilt it. It was real simple to figure out. If it's automatic, there's a hollow shift tube inside the column and solid steering rod inside that. The shift tube is spring loaded and actuated by the shift handle. The steering rod turns inside of that with a bearing on each end. One mine the column had been destroyed because the front cab mounts had collapsed and the column couldn't hold the weight of the truck. The lower bearing fell apart and then the steering rod wore through the shift tube. Someone had attempted to fix it by welding it but it was all boogered up. I ended up buying a brand new shift tube from the dealer and another steering rod from a salvage yard. The shift tube was pricey and I think I ended up spending $150 for new and used parts.

My cousin had the truck for about a year after my grandfather passed and when he finally told me I could have it he had had a problem with the shifter linkage(Automatic) so he went to a salvage yard and just found one that would fit and I don't think it was even for a Ford Truck. The u-joint thats in the steering column just above the power steering box,From there to the steering wheel has come apart and I cant even steer the truck.I would really like to find a steering column that is close to original due to the fact that my grandfather bought this truck new. When I can get it to steer I get to start rebuilding the motor that I was told blows Oil real bad.

If it's a two wheel drive it should have a rag joint between the column and the box. I think the 4x4's had the u-joints.

My uncle had the power steering put on when my Grandfather got to weak to man handle the manual steering so I dont have a clue if its aftermarket or not.You are right because its not a u-joint and the steering rod fell out thus it wont turn.

fell out? or is it just broke loose from the gear? if its just broke off the gear then you probably could just put a new rag joint in.
