Nothings working with Brake swap

Post by wobblefoot »

I have a 69 F100 2wd.Im doing the disk swap. My doner truck was a 73 F100. Ive gotten the spindles swapped everything there has lined up. Now the problem Im having is the booster swap the holes arnt lining up and apparently Im going to have to cut the firewall because the booster is hitting the valve cover. Also the rod is wrong, which is no problem because I can cut another hole in that shaft.I know I have the correct booster and brackets because I took them off the truck myself.By all the research Ive done it should be lining up I thought? Does anybody have any input the could help me with. Also a question do I have to use the booster?
Thanks in advance

If you want power brakes, you have to use the booster. I can't see going through a disc brake swap and not going with power brakes. Just my :2cents:
Was the booster setup off of the 1973 that you got the discs and spindles from or was it off of a bump era truck?

It was off the 73.The rod that goes through the firewall is totally off. Its almost straight down. Im wondering if I need to cut a notch in my firewall, also is the booster only supposed to be about 2 inch from the valve cover? I will have to take the booster off to take my valve cover off. Wondering if maybe I can find an 8-10 in booster?

I'm sure some have used the dent era brake boosters, but I believe that you would have a lot more clearance at the valve cover, and an easier installation if you used a 68 to 72 brake booster. The rod would hook right up to your brake pedal. You may have to use the adjustable rod in the booster to get the correct brake travel/pressure, but should pretty much be a bolt up and go installation.

73-79 used 5 different brake pedal set ups. 73-79 also had trouble with the 460 engines and brake boosters hitting the valve covers. ford used a cantilever brake booster bracket and different booster to get around the brake booster. there are also changes in mid 77 to some brake booster brackets. and wotn line up with our brake pedal brackets. they remind me of a A by the way they look from the side.

does your booster brackets have holes in the side of them? two large ones? or are they soild with no holes in them? or do they have a rod set up that looks kind of like a Z inside of the brackets?
what size is the booster? 7 inch 9 inch 11 inch?

thats wierd that it still hits the valve cover. i thought that the cantilever type was the type that brought the booster up away from the valve covers. it may be it is booster size that also has to do with that. since you have the z bar brackets you can use the new booster and the old brackets with the z bar stuff removed and it should all work fine.

This is a 390 and the booster is a big one from a '75 I think. I don't remember what pushrod is in there. Since this photo, I've upgraded to a disc front end as well (also all from a '75) with dropped DJM beams. This photo shows the original drum/drum master. I replaced it with a new disc/drum master and fabricated all new hard lines. I guess my point is, the big booster will work if the brackets are correct. The new booster you've got coming should work just fine too and like it's been mentioned, you need the booster when you go to disc otherwise you'll require more pedal pressure than your drum/drum setup did.
