I have a '70 4x4 1/2 ton & am having the same trouble as several others on this forum. I want to swap out my open knuckle "kingpin" type with an open knuckle ball joint type from a '71 or '72 F-100. Is this just a remove & replace project or is there a problem with the tie rod hook-up? According to parts catalogs I have it appears the whole front axle assy. on these three model years is identical except for the knuckles. The trunnions are to hard to find & the shims are non-existant. Ball joints seem the logical way to go. I would appreciate any input anyone might have. This project is down the road a ways as I am starting with the rubber seals, then to the floor pans that probably need repair due to water leaks on the right side. Money is tight & only filters in a bit at a time so all I can do for now is get advice/conformation to my project repair. This looks like a place to go to ask fellow F-100 owners for help. I will cherish all advice.
Thanks, 70ford1.

Re: steering knuckle swap
Thanks Forrestbump for the link. I have already digested that info--In past experiences I have found that paper instructions may or may not be complete--I was hoping someone had already performed this swap & could say if it was as simple as it seems or if possible alert me to a quirk that was overlooked in the web link. I am going to go ahead with with this swap--was just hoping to forgo any surprises. When I learn more about how to handle this forum I will take some photos & post them. Incidently, I bought this truck new 41 years ago & it is still going strong. Just needs a small bit of up-dating. Thanks again.
