steering shaft measuring

so i have read and read and I am not finding a clear explanation (with pics maybe) of how to measure the steering shaft length. obviously a tape measure, but from what point to what point? top of threads or splines? from what part of the coupling flange? I am doing a PS swap and want to make sure I have the right parts
