Super Cab F250

Post by survivorman »

I should have an Ford F250 Super Cab in my driveway by weeks end, and I got a few questions.

1. Is there any difference on the frame heights that would prevent the CV swap from going in?

2. How roomy are they in back. I have a kid and dogs and would like to throw something in back.

3. I figure it is going to have a D60 in the back, and I wanna throw a 9 inch in its place. Is there anything that I may wanna change with the springs, brackets or are they similar enough for a 9 inch and a flip?

One is a 74 in unknown condition, but the owner sounds cool hes asking $900 obo. It has a 460 and is a long bed. The motor suposedly is pretty fresh, and the trans decent.

The other one is a 78 short bed $600 obo that has good paint and needs a few pieces to get to 100%. The interior is good to very good, but needs a new 400M motor. I have a line on a rebuild for 500.

Either way I am looking for a Home Depot runner that can tow 5000lbs. I like the 460's becouse they work, can get good mpg's, and I have no experience with the 400M. Other then a 460 is a bolt in affair. I am leaning towards the 460 since my old friends F100 with a re-build like the one I have in my garage gets 20mpg set up for long distance driving. It has full bolt-ons and 2.73 gears in the rear. Would the 400 get close to this with edelbrock heads or should I just go 74 and forget about the 78?

I live in the Peoples Republic of California so I have to worry about smog Nazi's

Thanks

Just be forewarned, SuperCabs have special frames that are a different height than regular Ford trucks. Also, all of the front suspension is basically F350 stuff with the biggest axle/kingpins that Ford had for the twin I beam. The SuperCabs also have different cab floors (bucket seat brackets for a regular pickup don't fit but 78/9 Bronco ones do). When Ford designed the SuperCab they went all out and the rules that normally apply to how a truck was built don't apply as the components are not always what you will expect them to be. I have had several (only have one right now) and just when you think you get it the truck throws another curve ball! LOL Hawkrod

I will be going out there to see the 74 this thursday so I hope it is less of project then he describes. I think he is trying to be honest, and not selling a pipe dream.

If not the 78 will do just fine for my needs. I am looking for slow-touring on this project.

Fordman I am converting the whole truck to 5 lug. I am using the CV front suspension and bringing up the rear with a 9 inch so I can slam it pretty good on 17's or 18's.
