i was watching a movie and was thinking maybe they had to get the different booster because they used larger or higher valve covers. i don't know its not soemthing i have to worry about. i don't care for the 460 engines.

Guys. Sorry to add to an old thread, but I thought that carrying on the thoughts on the previous posts would be easier that starting over and explaining all of the above.

My '69 F250 power Brake Booster is gone bad. When brake pedal is pressed, I can hear a 'whooshing' sound. Went to the local (Columbia, SC) pull-a-part today and have the option of getting the old-style power brake booster w/ straight shaft original to my truck OR changing over to the larger diameter brake booster with the offset bracket and cantilever style.

If there a performance difference in the two setups? Given the two choices, I'm thinking of upgrading to the early 70's style due to the larger diameter booster, but is Bigger Better when it comes to power brake boosters???

Thanks, in advance, got sharing your knowledge/experience! Any advice is greatly appreciated. :fr:

the offset bracket was used to make room for the valve covers to come off of the 460 engines. there may be some differences in vacuum power to push the pedal. but i dont think it would be a big deal to worry about. i think but i am not sure without looking it up again that the larger offset type of booster is a single diaphram booster. and the smaller booster is a dual diaphram booster. the single would have only one rubber diaphram inside of it and the dual would have two. it could be the other way around too. i just dont remember for sure.

Just to update my post from yesterday, I picked up a cantilever style power brake booster off of a '73 F-250 from Pull-a-part today to replace the vacuum leaking straight shaft original style booster that was originally on my 69 F-250 Camper Special.

In case anyone wants to know the difference in drivability of the two styles, the newer cantilever style (off of '73 f-250) definitely gives you a much shorter pedal. The pedal is now closer to the floor and has much less travel before brakes are engaged. I believe the newer style brakes much better that the older style booster, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Opinions are like a@@holes, everybody has one. Given the choice of the two booster styles, I definitely like the cantilever style booster better that straight shaft. Brake pedal travels shorter, brakes engage with less effort and brakes better!
