king pins

Post by michael69 »

I am helping someone with king pins on a 69. The new set came with two little ring seals. They fit tight on the pins. Where do these go. I don't remember mine having these. They probly did just don't remember. I did mine as I tore them apart. His has been all apart for a few weeks and he said he can't remember where they went but he did remember taking them out. They look like a small brass ring with a rubber lip in it. Also which way is the top and bottom of them. :help:

Been a long time since I'd done any, I still have to do them on my one ton.
But this might help:

I didn't see the part I was talking about on that. I don't know maybe its for different year and not used on the 69.

Good evening Michael,

I think what you're describing may be the kingpin grease seal, which is supposed to be tapped in on top of the brass kingpin bushing. Perhaps you'll be able to tell if that's what it is by checking out the photos in this thread:

#50's I-beams/spindles 100% and bolted up!

:yt: Sounds like what they are. Been a few years since I did @#$&^@ king pins. But I seem to remember those seals. I know some that don't install the seal and seem to do ok. I would install them.

Robroy that is the seal, but there is only two. Are there suppose to be four? If not, which side of spindle does it go top bushing or bottom bushing? :help:

'Evening ManCar1 and Michael!

Michael, there are supposed to be two of those seals, not four, yet I can't explain why. I don't think I ever fully understood the logic of these seals.

I stared at the photos in my thread again to try to figure out which side I put them on, but I can't be certain, and I wouldn't want to give you a bogus suggestion.

Based on what I'm seeing in the 1972 manual on page 14-21-3 though, it looks like the seals are supposed to go on top. The seals look a little different in the diagrams, but I think they're referencing the same thing. Here are the two diagrams; you can click on either of these to see a little more detail.

And here's another item of interest:

That same page has instructions for the job, which I can remember following now that I see them again. If you'd like, I could include those here tomorrow (I'm working on a 12" screen tonight that's hard to edit images on)--just let me know!

Hi robroy and michael69. I always wondered why only 2. I wonder if Ford figured grease was more likely to work out the top than the bottom.

This is what I coundn't fiqure out. It looks like they would be one on bottom also. I guess they thought the grease went in on top and would work down so seal will hold it in top. The bottom grease gets put in at bottom so if it works back to bottom the grease cap/end cap would hold it in bottom :hmm: :dk: :dk:
