4x2 front wheel bearing rear seal
I started work on the drum brakes of my 1968 F100. At the front passenger wheel, when I took the drum off the bearing grease seal and the bigger wheel bearing stayed on the spindle. So now all I have to do is clean up the grease and repack them.
At the front left, the seal, and thus the bigger wheel bearing, stayed with the hub. I tried to pull it off with my finger and it doesn't move. I gave it a shot with a flathead screwdriver but all it's doing is pushing the rubber around, and since it looks like it's in good shape, I don't want to cut it up.
Questions are:
1. Does the seal that just came off need to be replaced? I don't know for sure there wasn't any grease in the brakes; that wheel had a bit of an oily backing plate. One of the pistons in the wheel cylinder is leaking a tiny bit and the other one seems to have seized.
2. Any tips for removing the seal that didn't come out of the hub?
I also noticed the hub has a *ton* of grease on it. Like a good 2 cubic inches of it. Seems excessive.
3. Is there any reason to add grease to the hub once you've packed the bearings with plenty of grease?

to remove the inner wheel bearing you take out the front wheel bearing. put the nut back on the spindle. then grab the hub and pull it part way off and tilt it. so the nut is sitting against the nut. then jerk the hub off. that will pull the bearing and seal out all at once. the bearing is the only thing that needs greased. extra grease inside of the hub area isnt needed.

Should I buy a new seal for the one that just "fell" off, or just use the same one?pelesl wrote: Questions are:

I've been using NPD for my parts so far but I can't find wheel bearings or bearing seals in the catalog.

The inner seal shouldn't just fall off. They have to be pressed into place.
If it fell off, that is why there was no grease inside that hub.

There was plenty of grease in there, and on the bearings. I think if any got out, it was very little. It's hard to tell with all the brake dust and the small brake fluid leak in the wheel cylinder.390Nut wrote:The inner seal shouldn't just fall off. They have to be pressed into place.

Anyone know where I can buy these seals?

Dennis Carpenter has them for $10. They also have the wheel bearings, cotter pins, and a few other bits.
