Tilt steering HELP.

Post by 289kman »

Hi Gang! I'd like a tip or two from someone who has encountered this....
I have a 68 F100 and I have acquired a tilt column from a 78 Bronco. i have thoroughly read the tutorial about the swap in Tech, but I see no mention of how to solve the neutral safety switch difference??
What have others done to get a working NSS?
Thanks!

Sorry about my ignorance on this, plus my truck is in storage where I can't eyeball it, but what I needed to know was if my 68 C-6 would already have the threaded bosses for the NSS and should I get one from a 78-79 truck (like the one that the tilt came from) If there are no threaded bosses on the trans, how difficult was it to mount??
Thanks!

If i remember right you just have to drill and tap the bongs and the 78-79 neutral switch will adapt to your linkage.
There is a thread with this done with pictures that was very informative, just try a search tilt column neutral switch.
Hope this works for you.

I cut a window in the column similar to the original nss on the stock column and then just welded a pin to the inner shaft.
I welded in a piece 3/8 round stock rather than using the original clip style pin because they seem to always break off.
Mine seems to be working just fine.

Ford used the same kind of NSS for many years/models of vehicles so you should have no problem finding one. Some of them have a short pigtail and others a long one (not sure which vehicle has which). Either way you have to hook the wires up to the plug in the cab where the original NSS was plugged into. Moving the NSS to the transmission is one of the first things I did to my truck because and I certainly would not hack up my tilt column to mount the original switch. Just my :2cents:

How are you going to get around it if you ever need to take the shifter tube out of the column? :hmm:

I'm not sure why or how often I'll need to take the column apart but if I do I'll just cut it off and weld it back in place after reassembly.
The transmission mounted switch sounds alot easier but I was having trouble finding a switch to fit my transmission and it only cost me about 20 minute time :)

I heard that. Sometimes you just gotta make things work with what you have, I know how that works.
