Re: Brake hoses...and now the brackets

Post by thorn1968 »

OK this is turning into the brake job from H3II... I found a split hose from one of my calipers. I can't seem to find the right one anywhere. Anyone got a picture of the hoses going from the caliper to the frame...I wish I knew what the cobbled this thing together from.

The ones that I got for a 73 look like this... but they don't route correctly to my hard lines.

What year and model is your truck? F100? Highboy?
Also, front drum or disk?

OK...I think I've figured out what's wrong...My truck originaly had drum brakes and the drum brake hose bracket looks like this:

The disk brake hose bracket should look like this?

So does anyone have some brackets off an old junker? :help:

I have a 69 F250 with drums that uses that frame mount and a 70 F250 with disk brake conversion that again uses that same frame mount. I did not do the conversion, a PO did it. Both of my F250's look like they're using the same rubber brake line.

If you can't find the correct line, take the old line to a shop that makes steel braided lines and have them make you a new set. The cost isn't much more than the OEM rubber.

Hey RacerZ...I believe this is only an issue with the F100s.

Hey fordman...The guys at my local Napa are trying to come up with something for me...if that fails, would you be willing to part with those brackets? Do they require drilling any holes, or unbolting the steering box?

Ok I just wanted to say thanks to fordman for sending me the correct brackets! :woohoo: Got em both cleaned up and painted on Saturday. Now for my next stupid questions!! Do I need to install these with 2 bolts on each side, or will one work fine? The frame only has one hole, do I need to drill a second one? And finally...how the  do you get the rivet out of the frame on the passenger's side!? I've about destroyed the old drum hose bracket with my grinder, and the rivet is still holding tight to the frame, but the bracket is off! I might try a c-clamp with a socket on the back side tonight.

I always drill out rivets. Use a center punch then drill it out. I start with a small bit, like a 1/8 then step up gradually. The last size will be just smaller than the hole rivet goes through. After that take a cold chisel and hammer to it. A few good whacks should pop the head off. Then you may need a punch or old bolt to push the remaining rivet through. This is the easiest way and does the least amount of damage to the surrounding parts.

Sometimes the rivet gets weak enough that the head spins off and gets stuck on the drill bit. You can use an over-sized bit but be careful not to go to deep. You only want to pop the head off without resizing the through-hole.

After the 1/8 bit, try a 1/4 inch bit. Keep in mind that the center punch will never be in the perfect center and you don't want to ovalize the hole in the frame.

My 69 F250 has two holes in the frame. The bracket has a tab at the top that fits in the top hole to keep it from spinning. See the pictures for approximate angle. The brake hose was in the way of the picture so I'm holding it out of the way.

Hmm.... I suppose my pictures are of the wrong bracket. Both my trucks look the same.
