ATF Ps fliud?

Post by AmericanMuscle67 »

In all my truck ive had with power steering, ive used power steering fluid. When I just got my 250 from my buddy, he said that the pump made horrible noises and that it doesnt work right, but that he put Ps fluid in it anyway. I checked the fluid level and the dipstick says "automatic transmission fluid only'" Is this the dipstick that belongs in the pump and does it require ATF? If so is that why it makes the worst noises ever and is power left and manual right?

:hmm: Seems to me like I was replacing an insulator for a ps hose retainer on the car and with the insulator was a note saying they wouldn't warrantee it if clear power steering fluid was used--and recomended only ATF. Since then whenever I ad it's with type F.

You will have to flush it out while the truck is running. Take the return hose off the pump that come from the box and put it into a bucket. As the engine is running pour fluid into the pump. Turn steering wheel from lock to lock and pour more fluid in. Do this 5 - 6 times. It is better to have a second person helping. Expect to go through 4- 5 quarts of fluid and then some to fill it back up when done.

Let me add. It is a good idea to put an extra piece of hose on the pump where you took the origonal hose off. Run it into the bucket also.
