t-case gasket

On my '69 highboy's transfercase, there is oil leaking from one of the access panel looking things that is bolted on.
On the front of the t-case (closest to cab) there is a thick access panel looking deal that has several bolts around it. Almost like some access panel or somethign. Oil is spewing from it... So I'd like to simply pull the thing off, put a new gasket on, and be on my way.

My question is what the heck is inside the cover and if i can truly simply just pull it off and put it back on or if htere are parts that have to come off with it or something? I just want to know what to expect is all.


this is the only pic i have of the t-case. you see the cover on the right side (which would be the front of the t-case when installed)? It is simply between the short driveshaft that goes to the 4spd and the output that goes to the front axle.

Also what oil should I put in it to make up for what it has lost over the years? Do i just fill it up to the plug?

Do I need to drain it all and replace it all? Or can I top off.

It appears that the cover you're asking about covers up the end of the middle shaft and bearing. It looks like you can just pop it off, replace the gasket, and pop it back on. As for filling the case, fill it up to the plug until it just starts to run out. Yes, you can top it off if you're sure the fluid in there now is good.

Thanks for the link, It certainly does look like a 10 minute job draining, swapping gaskets, and re-filling! I'm going to drain all the fluid and put new stuff in, the fluid in there now is probably 40 years old.

Any idea where i can get that gasket? I looked in my NPD catalog but can't even find any transfer case stuff, maybe I missed it???

I have no idea on oil as I've never messed with that particular transfer case. I'd assume just your standard 80/90w gear oil. Maybe somebody else on here knows.

Do a search in 4x4. If I recall I think its 50w. I could be wrong.

50w above 10 degrees, 30w below 10 degrees.

Cool Thanks. so what exactly will it say on the bottle of oil? I say some oil that said transfer case oil last time i was at the parts store, does it have to be specificaly t-case oil? Or just gear oil that is 50w...

50w engine oil. or everyone says that 75/85 gear oil works for them. and the gasket. is probably just paper. you can get plain roll of gasket stock and make one real quick. or use silicone if the surfaces are clean and clear of oil residue.

In the dana 24 transfer case there is a pocket bearing that connects the two piece main shaft. If you use heavier oil it does not lube that bearing as well.

I would go to napa and ask them the difference. I don't think its the same.

I trust fordificators more than any auto parts store on any day... someone HAS to know on here
