disk brakes with bendix ps

Post by flakos 69 »

I have a 69 shortie f100 it was converted to powersteering by the PO he used the bendix gear box. The donor truck I bought is a 76 f150 but the signaw box is shot so my concerne is if the pitman arm would work with the bendix box. :maybe:

No, the two Pitman arms are completely different. Read this info at this link:

:yt: you may be able to take up SOME of the play in the saginaw box with the top slotted adjusting screw. but probably not very much.

it has about a 1/4 turn and the adjusting screw is all the way out.

the box doesn't adjust only one way. it adjusts the main shaft up and down. it does that only to mesh the gears better. so you can adjust it down also instead of only up. or vise versa.

Just a minor point but adjusting the screw out makes it looser. You need to find the "high point" by centering your steering box and then adjusting until you feel some resistance while turning back and forth and then back teh screw out ever so slightly until it is completely smooth. The gearbox is tightest in the center so you can't adjust with the box turned one way or another. It is best to get the front wheel off of the ground to reduce friction. Do not overtighten as it will cause a lot of wear very fast. Hawkrod

what do you mean by loosen and overtighten. i thought the screw adjuster raised and lower the gears so they meshed properly. am i understanding it wrong?

You are not misunderstanding how this adjustment works. The screw adjusts the sector shaft up and down in relation to the worm shaft and roller assembly. The sector shaft gear has a crown (actually a crown left and right and a taper up and down) and moving it opens and closes the tolerances making it tighter or looser. If you overtighten the screw it means interference between the gears and loosen means to open up the tolerance alowing too much play. Hawkrod
