djm dream beams and king pin sizes

Post by jjh59 »

i installed a set of djm dream beams 3004-3 on my 67 f-100.now i want to upgrade to disc brakes on the front.reading the tech archives on this website.it says i need 73-74 spindles, because of the king pin size.but the application guide from djm says these i-beams will fit 65- 79 f-100 trucks.how can these i-beams fit different size king pins?

Do the beams come with king pins? If they do measure the king pin, if not measure the bore and go from there.

They don't have different king pin sizes, you are misunderstanding what you are reading. First off, these are aftermarket parts. They are made with the assumption that you will be modifing everything so they don't make a lot clear. The axles from 65-79 are pretty much interchangable with caveats for the steering stops depending on which spindles you use. Second, the king pins really did not change size despite a heck of a lot of misunderstanding about that. Check the specs, .8592" x 6.353" for many 67-74 or .8593" x 6.483" for many 71-79 kingpins. Notice the difference in diameter? the amount, .0001 is negligable and they interchange just fine (at worst you may need to run a ball hone through a dirty bore). The length is .130 different, that is just a hair over 1/8 of an inch. This is such a small amount that it is also not an issue. The only issue about which to use is which spindle assembly you are dealing with because you want to be able to assemble this thing and get the dust caps on. The thing to note is where the kingpin shaft sits when the lock bolt is in so that the bushings are riding on the shaft and you don't have shaft sticking out one end or another. Hawkrod
