4X4 drum to disc conversion

Post by stewartjwnls »

I thought I had seen reference to something on here that talked about how to convert drum brakes to disc on 4WD trucks. 68-72.

Now I can't seem to find any reference to that either by searching the discussion forums, or the Wiki.

Can someone point me to where I can get info on this?

Thanks.

I have a complete 8-lug dana 44 with disc brakes and the big hubs, that makes your conversion really easy

Thanks, but really hoping to not have to change out the whole axle.

What is that off of?

Sometimes that's not a bad option.
You can get the new axle ,and go through the brakes and U joints .
Get it ready to swap and not lay the truck up too long. :2cents:

I have seen pictures of it done but never learned how it was done. I have a feeling it involved some machine work and custom parts.

Unless the axle is a 76-77 they aren't exactly bolts in either. The high pinion 77.5-79 axles will probably need some Dshaft mods at stock height and you will get some bump steer because of the steering arm design unless you have an alternate plan for that.

It was off an old '76 Highboy I bought a few years back (low pinion I think), had big plans for the axles and my bronco but lost my storage and had to sell the truck, I am looking for a someone who can use the parts so they dont go to waste. I am about an hour south of Chicago if your interested???? The axle has the springs and lift blocks still on it and it is the version with the larger lock out hubs and big calipers. let me know if it can help you??

I appreciate the offer, but at the moment, I'm leaning towards just going from manual to power drums. Forgoing discs for now.

Too many projects going to add one more.

If that changes, I'll check back with you.

Thanks.

manual to power only needs to have a power booster installed to get power brakes.

I thought that was what I'd heard.

Thanks.
