So I'm in the process of re-doing the brakes on the rear of my 68 F250 4X4. Totally disassembled the left side, and in the process of cleaning and buying parts.
Tried to put the new bearings on the hub just to check. Won't go on. So, tried to put the old bearings back on the hub, just to see how tight they are. Won't go on. (don't have them in the hub yet, but did put a thin film of grease on both)
I don't remember them coming off that hard, and I can't see how anything has been dinged or misformed. I hate to get aggressive with it just yet, before I come up with some type of explanation. I realize the hub/drum assembly will help me when it's time, but concerned that there is an issue here I don't understand.
Has anyone experienced this, or offer an explanation? I've done this type of job before on other trucks, and don't remember having this issue.
Thanks.
Rear hub bearing problem.

Re: Rear hub bearing problem.
You didn't mention what type of axle it is, and I don't know about F250's nor much of anything about 4x4's, but if it's a 9" axle, and it's original to that truck, the bearings have to be pressed on. They need to be pressed, hammered, or cut to be removed as well.
If it's not a 9" then nevermind. Someone else will need to offer some ideas.

Dana 60 axle. The outer bearing just "popped" out when I tapped the hub/drum. The inner came with the hub/drum when I pulled it off. Again, did not take much force.390Nut wrote:You didn't mention what type of axle it is, and I don't know about F250's nor much of anything about 4x4's, but if it's a 9" axle, and it's original to that truck, the bearings have to be pressed on. Just can't understand why the new bearings won't slide on, let alone, the ones that just came off it.
I'm keep trying to figure out if I'm forgetting something obvious, but if so, can't for the life of me figure out what. Don't see any obvious distortions or marring.

Well, my first thought was that they new bearings were the wrong one. So I tried the old ones. And they won't gon back on easily.fordman wrote:did a china man make the new bearings? i am unsure whay the new ones wont slide back on. unless they got mixed up and oen has to go on before the other one. i dont know. i kept mine in order when i did a axle a while back.
It's almost like the spindle has warped or been marred, but can't see anything. As far as order, they both have to go back over the threadded portion, and they don't.

Re: Rear hub bearing problem.
The bearings are a VERY close fit to the spindle. If they're misaligned at all while you're sliding them on, they'll hang. Gently wiggle them as you're sliding them onto the spindle and they should go right on. If you can't even get them to fit over the threaded portion, then something's definitely wrong. That would indicate that you maybe somehow damaged the spindle after removing the hub and bearings.

Don't know if your D-60 is like my D-70 but mine has two different size bearings, (inner and outer).
Maybe you got them mixed up? Have you put a new seal onto it and maybe that is the pressure you're feeling?

Re: Rear hub bearing problem.
The inner goes right on, it's larger.
I was able to get the old outer on again by gently tapping it over the threads. Once past those, it fits fine. I believe the new one will as well once I get to that poing.
I suspect the threads are a little out of round or something.
Thanks everyone.
