Brake pedal slack

Post by sargentrs »

'70 sport custom. 302, 3 spd column shift, 3.03 trans, manual brakes and steering. Brake lights stay on all the time due to pedal not pulling all the way back up. Had a spring on it (I know, I know, no pride!) but it finally broke so now it's time to fix it right. Do I adjust out the slack at the wheels or is the adjustment at the master cylinder? Brakes work fine, pedal just has an inch or so of slack which let's it rest on the brake light switch. Thanks! Randy

if the brake pedal rod has no adjustment to it. the brake light switch does. you can screw the switch closer to the stop to get it to turn the lights off. if it is too far to adjust it then the wrong rod or master cylinder dont match up.

Thanks, fordman! I'll check that out. I'll have to get another switch. The nut's crossthreaded so I'm probably going to break it getting it loose. I can lift up on the pedal and it'll come off of the switch and turn the lights off. I replaced the M/C a couple of years ago and I could have sworn I checked and made sure the rods were the same........or did I.....?
