trouble with the supply of steering box bearings

Post by SRDUMBYE »

Hi, i decided to service my steering box myself and I found out that both bearings (maybe i'm using incorrectly the word bearing) were beyond worn, and maybe is too much but look like destroyed iron scrap, so i have to change them for a new ones. I think that if the pieces showed on the picture where not so damaged, it will be as easy as buy new balls and change them, but since this pieces are useless, i have a question. How can I ask for this? are there universal or only for steering box aplications? Could i buy it at a ball bearings Shop or only as FOMOCO spare parts... I hope no to been too poor explaining myself, but i have to admit that my english it's a bit rust...

If they came apart like that, it's likely you've got metal throughout the P/S system.

My suggestion would be to get a rebuilt box, a new or rebuilt pump and install a filter. You'll also need to flush the cooler and lines.

As you said Fordmán, those cages are trashed. But how of where can I get them? I mean, is is as easy as go to the spare shope and ask or they are those kind of hard to find spare? And as 70_F100 said, there were small iron chips inside the box, mixed with grease and balls, but I dot understaa why you said p/s when mine is manual... As far as I know I don't have power stering but correct me if I'm wrong. What kind of steering box is mine? Sanginaw or fomoco?
