hydroboost question

Post by BlueOvalDave »

I jumped on the bandwagon and completed the Crown vic and hydroboost (gmc astro van) swap. My dilemma is that at idle while in or out of gear and turning the steering wheel (such as when making parking manuevers) it seems that the combination of the braking and steering actions put such a strain on the motor it dies. Does a hydroboost unit eat quite a bit of power? Overall I love the braking ability and the fact that it doesnt rely on engine vacumn as I'm making only about 9inches with the cam thats in the motor but this is my daughters truck and I dont want her to have issues like that.

I'm also running an AOD but I'm sure that it's not an issue related to the lock up convertor because the truck drives really nice .
If this cant be resolved I'll be looking for a Ranger master without a booster.
Any responses are appreciated

What power steering pump are you using? The Thompson 'pencil-neck' or a Saginaw? The Thompson pump isn't the best choice to use for a hydroboost setup, it's highly advised to go with a Saginaw.

As I understand it, that pump won't quite cut it. I'd strongly suggest upgrading to a Saginaw-style pump. (FYI: Ford only used the Saginaw pump on the 351M/400 engines in vans and luxury cars.)

Thank you sir, I shall now be on the lookout at my local boneyard

Oh, another question, can it be used with the serpentine belt?
