Rust on chrome wheels

Post by Mancar1 »

Anyone have any tips on cleaning up my chrome wheels? They may be to far gone. Surface rust cleans right off, but they have some pitting. Maybe I should just sandblast and paint them. I tried Mothers, fine steel wool, Rust remover?chrome shine. Followed directions on rust remover for chrome.
Thanks for any tips, Mancar1 Problem solved: Getting new wheels :woohoo:

bad rusty pitting wont come out. you can get it back to plain pitted metal and then wax it over to stop the rust for awhile. i have used abrass wire brush on a drill for tought pitted stuff. it too the rust look off but the pitting wotn go away. pitting is damage to the metal. not bubbles under the chrome. bubbles is the chrome coming off with rust underneath it.

Thanks fordman. That is what I figured, just thought I would throw it out there. I will just clean them up as best I can until the piggy bank agrees to a new set.

I have had very good results with wadding up a sheet of aluminium foil into a ball and using it to polish the corroded part. Use your favorite chrome polish with the foil ball. I know this will not achive a show polish job but the aluminium will fill the small pits in and provide enough scouring action to remove the rust. It works!
