shortbox distance

Post by Drury74p »

hi there,

i was wondering if someone could tell me the distance from the end of the frame to the center of the rear wheel on a stock 69 f100 shortbox. also has anyone thought of changing the back of these trucks to coil springs with crown vic trailing arms?

I think ford-man is probably right, unless of course the bed is always loaded. But I can get you the measurement tomorrow when I get a chance .

Another option is to convert your 9" over to coil springs. You could probably get the brackets and spring perches for less than you'd pay for the crown vic rearend. Then all you'd have to get from the junk yard is the control arms. I've converted a couple of 9" rearends for coils for my G body race car. You can get coil springs in a wide variety of spring rates and heights to customize the ride height and feel that you would like. :2cents:

edit: While you're at it, you can also swap it over to disc brakes for a really sweet rear end.

Coil rear springs work fine on a pick up and don't make it too bouncy unless you have the wrong springs and shocks. There are plenty of Chevy's and GMC's on the road to prove that. Coils are much better in many situations but they require more parts and are complicated to get the geometry right. Leaf springs are a simpler device and work well it is just that they do not give as comfortable a ride due to the way that they work. There have been lots of improvement for leaf springs such as teflon sliders and such but they are all bandaides to try and make leaves work smoother. Coils definitely win the ride control end of it but leaves win in brute force. A Crown Vic rear is quite a bit wider than a stock truck and even with negative offset wheels they will stick out. I can't give you the number off of the top of my head but I think the Crown Vic is somewhere near 5 or 6 inches wider! Hawkrod

I measured it but couldn't find a plumb-bob to get an exact measurement, eyeballing it the center of the axle is about 36 1/2-37" from the rear-most part of the frame.
