Wheel size question

Post by Calfdemon »

I have the chance to buy some "old school" wheels that I really like, but am wondering if the size is going to be a problem.

I have a 72 F250 and the wheels I want are the old school 8 lug pattern, so no problem there.

They are 16.5" wheels which are the original size but limit the tire choices.

2 of them are 8" (fronts) and 2 are 10" (rears).

I know that with 16.5" wheels, there are only so many sizes of tire they still make, but I am not completely up to par on what those are as I have not run out to buy any tires yet. If I buy these wheels, will I be able to make them work with the 8" and 10" wheels and the available tire sizes?

My truck is currently stock height so it sits pretty tall right now, but I had planned on lowering it a few inches eventually and am wonding if I am going to have any issues with these wheels. I am more concerned with whether they will work at the stock height right now as I can always modify my lowering plans later if needed.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any input.

my advise is to not buy them. the tires would be so expensive that it is unreal. a 16 inch wheel would be better. and the price would drop alot for 16 inch tires.

I agree with fordman, also you wouldn't be able to rotate to prolong tire life.

Thanks for all the info from both sides of the fence. I currently have the stock 16.5 rims on my truck and have every intention of getting new wheels when I have to get new tires. I want to stay with a retro look as I am not too keen on most of the newer truck wheels, and I want to go with black wheels although if needed, I will just powdercoat them if I find a design I like that are not black.

Anyway, I am not going to buy the wheels at this time because of the different sizes (8" and 10") and will just keep my eye out for other deals. Upon researching available tire sizes, if I am going to get different wheels, I might as well go with a more standard size so I have more choices. I just seems that there are no where near as many size choices for 16.5" wheels.

So now the question lies with what size I should go with. I certainly am not looking for anything oversized, so probably going to go in the 16-18" range. I am going to have to play around with different wheel/tire combos until I find something I like. I initially wanted to lower the stance a few inches and give it a "hot rod" look while keeping it a functioning truck for the occasional haul, but I am not against putting some bigger tires on it and giving it a bit of a 4x4 look even though it is only a 2wd. Anyway, we shall see, but thanks for the insight and it gives me some new ideas to bounce around in my head.
