want to convert 4X4 Dana 44 from drum to disc

Post by wart-hawg194 »

I've got a '69 4x4 with a Dana 44. What do I have to do to make this a DISC brake set-up. Slightly modify...or swap with new truck front-end??

Swap the whole frontend to an open knuckle disk brake D44 or D60.

As far as I know there is no kit offered to do this conversion on a closed knuckle D44.

I did this swap to my son's 67, I used a 77 F250 d44. bolted right in. only change needed was the steering link. I believe that up to 1975 the d44 on Fords were all closed knuckle, very hard to find parts for. The 76 -77 1/2 model years used open knuckle.

Yes I havn't finished it yet we're going w/ P/S as well but I have an adjustale link from a mid 70's 3/4 ton 4x4 suburban that looks like it will adjust to the right size. Adjustable make more sence you can center the steering wheel w/o moving your alignment.

I swapped in a high pinion disc brake dana 44 out of a 76' F100 4x4. I picked one up at a local yard for 100 bucks but then I put about 350 bucks into it but it was worth it.
