the rag joint can flex as it gets old and worn. it can look good but be soft. it does sound like there is soem wear in your box.

You can check that bushing by laying under the truck and watching the pitman arm while someone turns the steering wheel back and forth. Do it with the engine off. And just turn the steering wheel as far as the play will let it go. You will see it if the bushing is bad. If it;s bad enough it will cause that seal in the bottom of the box to leak also. As far as that adjuster screw I wouldn't mess with it. If you do no more than a 1/4 turn at a time then check it. If you have that much play in the gears then you are beter off finding a different box.
