I got a p/s box from a 76 donor truck (no motor or trans) and was wondering if there was anyway to check these out or is it best to just use them as a core and go and get a rebuilt unit from a parts store?
Thanks,
Bobby

doing a quick visual when I took it off the donor I could not see any leaks or wet spots.. it did have some of the standard road grime on the bottom side (think the old motor in it had an oil leak), but the steering gear looked to be in good shape, even including the hoses.
Thanks,
Bobby

I don't think there's a way of testing these before installing them. As long as you can easily turn the input shaft and don't feel any dead spots, grinding or binding, (in addition to the leak signs already mentioned), I'd say you're probably OK.

great, I will look at that as well.
After I had it pulled and got it home I turned the input shaft and it was easy to turn and was more than happy to spit PS fuild at me.
Thanks for the help and information.
