Were '71 hubcaps / center caps stainless steel?

Hi, I've been looking for ages and have finally committed to a 1971 F250 Custom Camper Special. It is very original but someone's painted the center caps white and they look terrible enough that I don't even want to drive it home like that. Here is a close up shot.

My question is, were these stainless steel so I can just strip off the white paint, or is it likely that they were chromed steel and rusting, which would be why they painted them? I pick it up next weekend (which is why I can't check this myself). Thanks, Patrick in San Diego

They made painted steel and stainless steel .

Thanks, I have added a picture in the above post. Is there any difference visually between the regular steel and stainless steel ones? Would anyone be able to tell what these ones are? Thanks, Patrick in San Diego.

the regular steel caps were painted argent with black highlites and the stainless were not painted and had black highlites. i'll bet you can ebay or try here and get a good set of stainless pretty reasonable.
