I am a mechanical engineer, not a material eng. I was told by a fellow materials guy that the stainless steel will still get surface corrosion. It is more resistant to major corrosion. The majority of the material in stainless steel (304,316) is iron which is what is in typical steel (4140). The chromium that is added is used to create a protective layer by interacting with the oxygen in the air. This layer is a chromium oxide. Surface rust of stainless steel typically appears from iron being transfered to the surface from other steel. This can happen using rags wiping down steel and then wiping down SS. Some people try and clean SS with CS (carbon steel) wool which creates a perfect storm for surface corrosion. In the materials world of mechanical equipment, SS is used because it will not get the deep corosion that CS will. We use it because of corrosion, not for beauty.

Good day MrTLeavitt!

I'm sorry it took me over a year to get back to you about this; it slipped my mind until I ran across the receipt today! Hopefully this information will still be relevant to you.

The clip part numbers were LK3/16 (brakes) and LK5/16 (fuel lines). Here's the receipt; you can click on it to see a full-sized version.

I appreciate it. But ya, that project of mine is long gone. I got the hold down clips from inline and then bent my own lines. It turned out very nice! Thanks again!

Good evening MrTleavitt,

It sounds like I'll need to move a little more quickly next time to keep up with your pace, like perhaps a month instead of a year. :) My work usually goes so slowly that I'm out of touch with how quickly experienced guys like yourself can move on projects!

I'm glad to hear it worked out well for you though!
