Steering Linkage Noise

Post by ROBT257 »

On dirt roads I have noticed a new noise. I believe I have tracked it down to the steering linkage. I don't know if thats the correct termonolgy or not. But here are the pics.

Kind of a clang when you grab the steering shaft and shake it. A little oil build up too.

Then a little bit of a cling here at the Ujoint.

Like I said I'm not sure on the proper termonology....but I'm sure you guys can easily educate me.

So whats my fix? Or do you think I'm correct in my diagnosis of the noise?

Sorry, but you are talking to an extreme novice. I'm not understanding.

OH. That is exactly where the clanging is coming from. You might have diagnosed my problem from afar. Thanks, I'll try to figure out how to take it apart and see.

The GOOD News! I was wrong!

The noise was not coming from the steering linkage. While getting in there to start taking things loose, I leaned on the upper shock mount. It MOVED! Oops.

This is the origin of the noise I am hearing. The BAD news...... I don't have the appropriate tools to get into the back side of the frame, worming my way around to hold the back of the bolts/nuts.

Solution. I don't see any reason that I can't just weld the shock mount to the frame. Is there really any reason to take the thing off in the future?
