1972 Ford F100 2WD 390 FE w. AC/PS

What an odyssey...changed my harmonic balancer and discovered that the PO had some Mopar crank pulley. To do things properly I purchased a three groove crank pulley (# C9TE-6312-A [7 1/4" diameter]) only to discover that the existing 1 groove water pump pulley (#C8AE-8A528-B [7 1/4" diameter]) does not allow any space for the new crank pulley to fit. So I went out and bought a smaller water pump pulley 2 groove (#C8AE-8509-B [6 5/8" diameter]) which fit and allowed everything to align properly.
So now I have a problem with the steering pump pulley (unknown # [4 1/2" diameter]). I am running my PS belt around crank and water pump pulleys which take 15/32" or 7/16" belt, but my PS pulley seems to have wider groove and belt size and should work is around 53" length (cannot find v belts with that size). AutoZone tells me that I need a 55" long 15/32" belt, but in my case it is too long. I found a 54.5" long belt, but my tensioner is maxed out on a new belt...and this belt is bound to stretch. I have a feeling that PS pulley is also a wrong one, but not sure where to find the right one.
What diameter are pulleys in similar set ups as mine? And where can I find this mysterious pulley...will the March 502 PS Pulley work in my situation? Can someone point in the right direction? Part numbers? Sizes?

fo rnow spacer the ps bracket further away from the enigne and use the outer pulley or get rid of the dual pulley from the pump and only use the power steering pulley and crank pulley. soemthing ford did that i have never seen emntioned on here. is that when you are puttign your water pump pulley on. and the crank pulley is already in place. you have to tilt the water pump pulley into the grooves of hte crank pulley to clear the crank pulley to let the water pump pulley slide onto the water pump fan mount.

So do all FE PS pulley receive 1/2" belts? I can extend the bracket out and utilize the last wider grove on the crank, but eventually I will need to use it for AC which also receives 1/2" belt. If not, how would I run AC then? Seems like swapping out a pulley to accommodate belt width and length would be more practical. Looking at the the diagram http://www.fordification.com/tech/image ... werpak.jpg I need a similar set up: 1st belt (crank+water pump+alternator) 2nd belt (crank+water pump+power steering) 3rd belt (crank+AC+idler). I still feel that the PS pulley is too small...very easy to steer and it whines a bit (I am certain that belt width and groove width of the pulley are part responsible for that whining). I checked ebay and there are no ps pulleys that could be applicable.

factory ac or dealer a/c? it will matter between the two setups. mixing and matching pulleys isnt fun. and it doesnt always work. i am sure the pulley you have is probably too small. but what abotu the rest of the pulleys? are they right for your a/c setup?

More development on the issue. I purchased AF pulley (5 5/8" dia. single sheave for 3/8" belt). Upon installation onto power steering pump, it did line up with second sheave on the crank pulley, but unfortunately coolant return hose was in the way. So I had to put my original 6AA steering pulley (4 5/8" dia. single sheave 1/2" belt) back on. After some further inspection, I managed to shim my rear support for the power pump pulley bracket by 1/4" and have perfect alignment of steering pulley with 3rd crank sheave. So this brought me to this set up which I've seen before.
1st crank sheave: crank+fan+alternator
2nd crank sheave: crank+fan+alternator (I installed a two sheave alternator pulley realizing that 2nd crank sheave can only be used for it)
3rd crank sheave: crank+P/S
My hang-on AC has two sheaves (first from the engine lines up with 3rd crank sheave and second should line up with 4th crank sheave which does not exist) At this point everything is leading towards my crank needing to have 4 sheaves, since I doubt that P/S and AC can share one belt. Ford Parts Manual mentions D2TZ-6A312-A crank pulley for '72 w. hang on A/C. Did people who added a hang-on AC system had to completely replace their crank pulley for a 4 sheave crank pulley? or is there a single sheave pulley attachment that was supposed to be attached to the original crank pulley?

some of the add on air units came with add on pulleys for the crank shaft pulleys. and some had replacemnt pulley for the crank shaft pulleys.

I've never seen a 4-sheave crank pulley. I don't remember reading if your AC set up is factory or hang-on, but you should have the following set up using a 2 sheave water pump pulley and a 3 sheave crank pulley

Crank
1st sheave (closest to engine) runs crank, water pump, single belt alternator
2nd sheave runs crank, water pump, power steering
3rd sheave runs crank, AC comp, adjustable idler for AC.

The AC belt actually goes around the water pump without touching it.

Sorry, I just read that you have a hang-on AC. Even still, you mention that the AC comp lines up with the 3rd sheave on the crank. This is correct. I wouldn't worry about the send AC comp sheave as the comp will only need one belt. Having said this, I think your problem is that you are trying to run the AC comp belt around the water pump and at least on my FE, the belt does not contact the water pump pulley.

You also mention that you PS pump is running from the 3rd crank sheave. It sounds like you have the wrong pulley. Mine has a 7AA pulley, which puts it inline with the 2nd crank sheave.

the factory air units had two idlers so it went around the water pump. the idlers were on both sides of the water pump.

Actually that's not entirely true. The second idler you mention was an afterthought on Ford's part as a fixed idler to reduce or eliminate belt slap. The non-adjustable pulley is located down close to the PS pump bracket while the compressor is mounted high enough for the belt to clear the water pump.

The absence of this stationary idler doesn't affect the position of the belt relative to the water pump. The AC belt will still go around the water pump even with just the adjustable pulley.

Yep - that pulley on the driver side is the one Ford used to reduce belt slap. I ran my AC for a few years before finding one to install. It does just that - it eliminated the growl because of the long distance the belt travels from the crank to the AC compressor, which is also the load side.

I've posted this link before. This is exactly what my 69 428cj Mustang and 69 360 Pickup belt arrangement looks like, except the smog pump. I don't have smog on either FE engine, but both use the exact same pulleys and compressor arrangements. The only difference is the PS bracket used on my truck is special in order to miss the oil filter mount.

Alright I finally figured this out...not sure if this is the right factory set up, but it works.
I purchased a 7AA pulley and upon the install realized that it will not work...it would align with 2nd sheave and coolant return line is in the way. I have to use the 3rd sheave for power steering. So I had to put my 6AA pulley back on. After adjusting the power steering pump bracket, belt lined up perfectly with 3rd sheave. I had the correct power steering pulley after all.
I got a two sheave alternator to run a dual belt with first two crank and water sheaves.
After that I had an issue with AC and knew that there has to be a 4 sheave crank pulley. I searched and searched until I've gone through all the previous owner pulleys that came with the engine and found an additional "Mapco" pulley which adds onto crank pulley and acts as a 4th sheave.
My current set up is: 1st sheave 1/2" (crank, water, alternator), 2nd sheave 1/2"(crank, water, alternator), 3rd sheave 3/8"(crank, power steering), 4th sheave 3/8"(crank, idler, ac). Not sure what the origin of this Mapco is, but it works.
