help with screw thing a mabobs

i can't get the little screws that holds the drum onto the backing plate off, any suggestions, i figured i better stop before i strip the head. i even tried spraying them with brake cleaner and tapping them with a hammer. i'll post a pic hopefully this week

Spray the screws real good with PB Blaster penetrating fluid, then get an impact tool with screwdriver bits, the kind of impact tool you smack with a hammer. You should be able to get one at your auto parts store for around $15. Give each screw a couple whacks, then spray some more and come back next day and repeat.

just had the same problem with mine. If you can't get ahold of an impact tool, i used a punch and a hammer to get them started and they just unscered after that. Good luck to ya.

I had bought new ones from my local carquest about 2 yrs ago.

well i got em loose, took a center tap and a hammer and whacked it about 10 times per screw and they unscrewed reeal nice. now comes the fun part, replacing the wheel cylinders.

Glad you got them off!
They were originally put on at the factory to hold the drums in place until the wheels were installed. Most people don't put 'em back on, so it's possible your drums have never been off before.
My '68 still had the original drums painted factory body color!

no i know what your talking about. i just chiseled at mine to get them off the lugs and no i don't put them back on.

well the truck has 156,000 miles on it and when i pulled the left drum off, the brakes looked like they had been replaced recently, about half life left.and 2 of the screws were missing on that side.

its funny that someone put them back on. i guess the reason would be to hold the drum until they could readjust the brake pads to get thenm tight. i try to adjust them just as i slip the drums on so i have no need for the nut washer deal.
