Drum to disc upgrade
Does anyone know what the measurements are for the i-beams from the locator bolt to lower kingpin? Or will a newer i-beam with ball joints will work on a 69 f100? thanks

Re: Drum to disc upgrade
i've read the articles on updating, it didn't say anything about newer i-beams. thanks for your help. i was thinking about buying a newer, 01, econoline van and swapping all the running gear for an injected bumpside with all the electronics and it would just make it easier to do the brakes and everything from that, then i could even have abs. maybe i'll just do a body swap though.

I have been toying with the same idea, the I beams with ball joints part, because I don't really like king pins. The I beams from the newer (80's and up Trucks) are shorter than bumps and dents and they are also different from one side to the other (The one on the passenger side is several inches shorter than the driver side). The 80s and up are also front steer, meaning that the steering mechanism is in front of the axles and the older trucks are rear steering.

the vans have a front steering box. so all of the steering linkage will be in front of the axles . instead of behind like the trucks are. then you would have to rig in a proper steering column extension or a different steering column from the van. the van thing has never been done because it is too much work and may not work at all.

Re: Drum to disc upgrade
Does that hold true even for the 70s vans? Come to think about it probably does. And that would mean that the spindles from the vans are different than from the truck. Or are they/can they just be swapped from left to right and vice-versa? That is interesting, never thought about that before. Just goes to prove how much knowledge and experience there is on this forum.fordman wrote:the vans have a front steering box. so all of the steering linkage will be in front of the axles . instead of behind like the trucks are.

Re: Drum to disc upgrade
Sorry, van spindles are totally out as a transplant. Just use the truck pieces and bolt 'em on.
