Removing the leaf springs

Post by tod-hog »

Want to lower my project SWB and am pondering the requirements of that project. From what I have read on this site flipping the spring hanger seems the most cost effective or the least cost prohibitive.

How does one safely relieve the spring tension in order to remove the springs and ultimately drill out the rivets? Then I guess one owuld have to safely apply tension in order to get it back in place. Can captain novice handle this? If this is posted elsewhere please refer me there.

Thanks fellas. :hmm:

i think you jack up the axle to a midway point to relax the spring. then remove the spring then when you put it back use a jack on the back part of the spring to push it back into place. thats the way i seen it done. i done a mail jeep once and i jacked up the axle and took off the spring and put it back with out jacking that spring into place though.

If you remove the nuts on the bolts thur the bushings , and lift your frame rails, leaving your wheels on the ground, to a point you can turn the front pin bolt by hand this should get the spring in a no load state . Knock out the front bolt to release front of the springs , and the rear bolts can be remove by moving the front of the spring up and down . If you are removing the spring completely I recommend loosening the u-bolts before removing the spring pins , don't remove u-bolts completely the weight of the spring will keep the center bolt in the spring perch until the u-bolts are completely remove.
To reassemble you can replace the springs in the hangers , lower the frame rails until the center bolts sit into the spring perches replace u-bolts, snug everything up set all the weight down on the axle and tighten to spec .
