Getting king pins out

Post by JMcTurnan »

So I removed the bolt through them, and is that all i need to do? I hope because I started pressing them. I have a 12ton shop press, and man oh man, they are hard as hell in those to get out. ANy tricks, im guessing just get a steel fence post and use for leverage.

heat the i beam where the pin goes through. that is where they rust at because it doesnt have any way to get grease. there is a bushing/bearign ont he bottom of the i beam where the pin goes through that will probably be rusted onto the kingpin. all of mine have been. i torched off the bearing/bushing and the king pin finally started to move with a hammer and punch.

I think I made of found my problem, my press is slightly wider. The width of the bearings not the rod. So Ill have to put a socket or something under it.

A nice large drift and a 4lb shop hammer has gotten every one I ever went up against out. You have to place something underneath the I beam that will not absorb the blow. A short piece of oak 4'4 works well.

Take 'em to a shop, have the old ones pressed out, new brass bushing installed and reamed, and the new king pins installed. Unless you go with nylon bushing which will not last, you're going to have to take it to a shop anyway.
