Stuck brake?

Post by tnbumper »

Havn't had a chance to work on my '69 since I got it. Just put it in the barn to keep it out of the weather. Good strong 6 had no trouble getting in the barn even with one stuck wheel. Finally got time to check it out yesterday. I had originally thought it was a rear wheel and had picked up shoes and w/c's so I would have the parts when I got around to it. Had parked to tight to one side so I attempted to move it with no luck in the dry barn floor material, but both rear wheels were turning. I focused my attention to the front jacking up one side at a time. Found the culprit, right front. Freed up the adjuster and checked for leaks, but my biggest problem was that the PO had torqued down on the spindle nut before installing the nail(cotter key substitute) and had the bearing in a bind. I bet he put a couple of years on the clutch trying to move it around with the stuck wheel. Don't know how he ever got it on the car trailer to bring it to me. Oh yeah, did I mention that when I removed the wheel cover I discovered that there were only 3 lugs nuts! I will be doing a thorough inspection of all 4 wheels/brakes before I get on any roads. Taking the new brake parts back to the parts store for now and picking up a carburetor kit today to see if I can get it to run better. Looking forward to getting this truck usable, I need to go get some sheetrock for my house project. tnbumper

TNBumper, I've seen car dealers do this in an attempt to "hide" a faulty wheel bearing just before a sale.

Are the bearings ok? You might want to at least re-grease them. :2cents:

basketcase, I will definately be going back and at least packing the bearings if not replacing them and looking at all the brake related systems. Youth and inexperience are the main culprit, but at least he wasn't afraid to try. I was young once and there is only one way to learn, just do it! Thanks for your reply. BTW if I go to a car lot I just go ahead and go to the back lot because that's where the 'truth' is really told. Around here they call them the junk lot. tnbumper
