biggest i beams

Post by 1desertbluedog »

Trying to figure out what factory i beams from what years were the most heavy duty. i have been told that the beams from 68 to 72 in f 350's and e 350's were the most heavy duty. allso trying to figure out what spindle were these mated up to. It seems that vehicles were built with what ever was on the shelf that day and that there is no rime or reason to what came with what. If any of you ford guru's have any of this knowledge, i would love to know. the purpose of this is to have big beams that get bent a bit , then move the pivit points in a couple of inches, and wham you have 20 plus inches of wheel travel without having custom beams built for the cost of an arm and a leg. Remeber , curt Leduc had a 8 truck that kicked the crap out of his competion with beams from a camper special.
Thankyou in advance for any light yo can shed on this subject.

I would think the biggest would be out of a dentside-era F350 Super Camper Special, but I'm no expert on this.

68-79 F350 have the most heavy duty beams.
They should have a 4 Bolt style forged spindle.

Trying to get 20" out of stock width beams is almost laughable, what kind of camber angels are you expecting at bump and droop?. Safe for the 1.050 king pin is + or -10 degrees.
If you can figure out steering you can reliably pull about 17.5" out of that beam/spindle combo.

You want to be moving the beam pivots out, not in, then lengthening the beam to suit. Longer beam means less camber change which = more wheel travel.
FYI to get the 20" you looking for you'll need to lengthen the beam about 10" to 52" pivot to king pin.

With stock beams, a coil spring and stock style rear steer you'll be limited to about 12-13". The steering will limit your droop and coil bind will limit your bump.
With a coil-over you will get more bump travel and should be able to pull a safe 14".
With swing set steering, the coil-over, and + or - 10 degrees of camber you can get the 17.5".

Disclaimer: all wheel travel measurements taken at the end of the spindle, not at the edge of the tire on a 12" wide rim with wheel spacers haha
