Drum brakes newby - Did I miss anything?

Post by SixtyEight-F100 »

hi-

I picked up a pair of '68 F100's over the course of the last year. One is a custom cab (I believe its called) w/ 360, A/T, manual brakes/steering, the other is a Ranger w/ 390 A/T, factory buckets & a/c, power steering, power brakes, etc. This one started pulling hard left so I decided to do a brake job. I picked up new front drums, shoes, parts kits, wheel cylinders, flex brake hose, and wheel bearings. The orig shoes were worn down to only rivets and as such had worn 1/8" deep grooves in the drums. I'm guessing that was the problem. I finally won the battle of getting the lugs out and seperating the drum from the hub (It looked like one solid piece and I was certain they wouldn't seperate but PB Blaster saved the day). I've looked at many pics, factory manual (the big one) and other stuff but many of them show a spring going horizontally between the 2 pads. I didn't have it originally and one didn't come in the parts kit. Take a peak at my pic--does it look like I got everything done right? I haven't greesed the axel yet just unconfident that I did the rest right since this is my first time with drums.

Thanks. Adam

:yt:

It is correct if that is the left front (can't really tell from the picture).

Be sure that the adjuster expands when the outside of the star wheel is rotated down, and not up.

Oh, and by the way, you don't grease the axle (spindle). :nono: If you do, there's a good chance you'll drag the grease off when you install the hub and that grease will get on your new linings within a few minutes and ruin them. Just pack the bearings well and put some grease in the center recess of the hub. The spindle will get grease on it from the bearings and the center recess of the hub.
Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools talk because they have to say something.--Plato
Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

that's why I love this message board. Since the spindle was heavily greased prior I was ready to re-do it but makes sense that it will get grease naturally. I'm always learning from someone whos been there and done that before me.

Now, I'm hung up on trying to get the old wheel bearing outer pieces unstuck from the hubs. Anyone have any hints/tips on getting those buggers out. Would a stack of washers and a long bolt perhaps make a good pounding tool?

Thanks for all the help !

It sounds like you're trying to get the bearing races out of the hub assembly?
If so, there is a set of drivers made to do this:

About every auto parts store carries them, (probably another brand).
Or do it the "old school" way and use another bearing race and hammer to get it out.

That would be a great set to pick up and add to the tool chest. I ended up taking them in to a local shop. They pressed out the old races, greased my new bearings, and installed them for $25. Seemed like a fair deal to take the easy route.

when pulling the rear bearing you put the nut back on the spindle. and let th drum hang slightly down off the spindle so the nut acts like a stable piece and then jerk the hub off of the spindle and nut. that will force the bearign to push out the wheel seal and remove the bearing.
