while reading about power steering conversion I'm a little stumped.
I am currently using my 1972 f100 as a daily driver.
I have purched the Colum, ps pump, gear box, brakes I beams ect.. from a 1979 f150.
I need to do my conversion and front end wap in 2 steps .
my question is, I see that the tie rod ends are longer on a 79 looking under steering and suspension section it reads.
"Here's a view of the differences between the stock '67-'72 vs. '73-'79 tie rod ends, where they connect to the spindle's steering arm. This is due to the later spindle's steering arm being thicker. Therefore, early steering linkage cannot be used with later disc-brake spindles without some grinding on the spindle's steering arm to allow the tie rod end to protrude through enough to install the castle nut and cotter pin."
I need to go the other way use the 79 draglink and tie rod ends on my 72 so they will be too long,
can I just shim them until I can swap the spindles or will I need to?
question on tie rods

Re: question on tie rods
So you're doing a power steering swap AND a disc brake swap, right? And for now you're just wanting to install the power steering components, and do the disc brake swap later?
There should be no problem with just installing the power steering box and column into your '72 and then installing the disc-brake components (including the spindles and steering linkage) later on. The '79 steering box will have the correct Pitman arm that matches the existing steering linkage on your '72, so you don't need to swap the '79 steering linkage in until you install the disc brake spindles.

Re: question on tie rods
yes, power steering swap and a disc brake swap .
yes, just put in the power steering for now.
this was my toy that has recently become my daily driver
I have 245/60/15 on the front and a small grant steering wheel on it.
I'm a big guy but that's too much for me to drive in traffic for too long.
guess I'm just spoiled!
I am also looking forward to the disk brake swap.
steeping on the pedal in the mornings and having pull straight would be a big bonus.
whith the disk brakes how much more braking is there?
this will make it much easier for me to do a nice clean job instead off rushing though.
thanks for the reply
