I understand about the fuel tank frame, I meant the box bolts themselves, because they cannot be turned from above because they are a carriage head bolt...
...I guess you could just put a regular bolt in place of the originals.

Good observation. I hadn't seen that yet since the bed is just sitting there and not bolted on. It does look like maybe I'll be able to get something up there, maybe flex socket, somehow. I'll have to see. Another option is to weld a nut to the inside and go with a bolt from the top. I have seen some large round Torx-headed, low profile bolts that may work from the top. I actually like the idea of the bed bolts going in from the top anyway. Interesting observation. I'll let you know.

After a little research, it looks like I could use new style Ford truck bed bolts. They go in from the top and have a nice attached washer. The new bolts utilize a clip nut that clips on the frame, I think I'll just weld the nuts on to my frame.

My 2008 F-350 has the large torx headed ones you mentioned. They would look good.

I haven't started putting my tank in yet but I did buy it, hopefully get at it this weekend. I have to ask these dumb questions because my own truck box is at a body shop 4 hours away right now.

If a person went with the 17 gallon you would be able to slide it backward a bit to access the bolts, but then you would only have a 17 gallon tank.....I like longer trips.

well i just saw the pic showing the rear view of the tank..
yep...unless i move it up i doubt ill be able to use it... never the less its still some good info...


as far as the rear bolts on the bed..to remove/install..
what you can do is add a piece of pipe..weld a nut,round off the square hole on the bed and add some bolts thru the top..

There is not very much room to raise the tank with my type of install and tank model. Earlier tanks are less capacity and have more room on the top side of the tank. The 22 gal. tanks make up the extra gallonage on the top side of the tank. The earlier tank (20 or less gal.) might work for your application.

Another option on your "Thumb Grab" would be to put it as an indentation in the bottom in front of the door (see pick below) so that you wouldn't have it sticking up to catch on something sliding it in the back. Just a different way at looking at it.

Good point on the thumb grab! (Damn, why didn't I think of that?) This truck is going to be 525HP very soon and I don't plan on ever carrying anything in the bed. I have another truck to use to haul stuff.

Yeah, I kind of thought the back wouldn't get used much in yours, my shorty will not get used much when done either. I got 2 other trucks to haul with
But mine wont have your kind of HP either...
