OK Im searching; 67 only master cylinder ??

Post by jzjames »

Well it was the first thing I replaced when I got my 67 in '01, -the mastercylinder- and I assumed it was a 67 MC because thats what I ordered....from Bucky's!
Well its 8 years later, and you know how those Chinese parts are, they just dont last that long and Im replacing it again in 09, and I know its a 67 MC, but the pushrod doesnt really work with the now installed Master cyl. Its too short, so I must have had a 68-72 one?? The pushrod is way too short and the brake pedal sits almost on the floor.
So the question is, is the 67 pushrod about 3/4 inches longer than the 68-72 ones? and where can I get the 67-only one?? thanks :D

The pushrod on the '67 will be 5/8" shorter than the '68-later version. If your new replacement is putting the brake pedal 2" from the floor, then it almost sounds like you have the correct master cylinder, but you've got a '68-'72 pedal bracket assembly installed in your '67?

Take a look at the bottom of this page for some relevant pictures (Number 5).

The factory part number for a '67 master cylinder without the brake booster is C7TZ-2140-K. The following dealers have this in stock:

thanks Kieth, I couldnt find that page even though it was right there!
Didnt seem likely that the pedal bracket had been switched, but like they say, anything is possible in 40 years. The truck seems to have been a Oregon DOT truck, pretty original, yes the pedal is just barely high enough off the floor to alow me to brake , the MC was the last part of all new brakes.
Do I just put in the longer pushrod now?? Have you ever heard of where you can buy those nylon bushings that fit inside the push rod? :o

Do you still have the master cylinder you removed from the truck? If so, measure the length of the pushrod, from the flat mounting surface to the center of the pushrod, and then do the same for the replacement you just got, and see what the difference is. I'd be willing to bet it's right at 5/8". If so, you just need to crawl up under the dash of your truck and take a measurement from the firewall back to the brake pedal hole, like what's shown in the pictures of the link I posted above, and see if your bracket is a '67 or '68-'72 piece.

I could be wrong, but don't think there would be a problem switching pushrods...but then again, I've never tried it and so I wouldn't know if that could be done. Otherwise, considering how inexpensive a master cylinder is, I'd just bite the bullet and get the correct piece, just for peace of mind.

As for the bushing, I'd have no idea. Maybe hit a local Midas brake outlet and see if they have some?

Nope, something else is going on here, I just went out and measured from firewall to pedal pivot hole as you illustrate;

My bracket has that measurment at 3 7/8'' , making it the 67 bracket.
Now I noticed on the old mastercylinder I removed, the pushrod end was held inside the MC hole with a circular metal clip .... like the type of washers you push onto a stud and it keeps it there with metal diaphram-shape config. whatever...... I had to remove the c-clip off the end of the MC to get the pushrod out of it, Ive never seen this before in a mastercylinder. Is this how they are? Could they be messing around with the 67only and 68-72 M/C's you buy by using a clip on the 67 only ones? I'm starting to sound dumb to myself. :P

I think Ive got to figure out what exactly is the diff between the 67-only MC's and the 68-72's :hmm:

all the push rods should have a metal clip on them to hold them into the master cylinder. they do all come out with the right amount of pulling power. i think i would use your old rod on the new master.

Thanks Fordman.
Yeah the old one had a clip. The new MC didnt! It didnt seem like I should have to disassemble the master cyl. and have everything pop out in order to install a new master cyl. PIA!
I couldnt get the pushrod out of the old MC. I pulled hard thinking it would be a pop out. Then I put a small bar through the hole of the pushrod and rapped the bar with a hammer. It didnt pop out. So I had to take apart the end of the MC and it took some prying with a screwdriver to get the sucker off.

YO, Fordman and Kieth, went on to find out Schucks sold me the wrong MC, they'll replace it with the correct one for a 67. The depth of the hole on the pushrod end was 5/8 deeper on the one they sold me - probably for the 68-72 truck, and it didnt have that round retainer clip that was on the 67 MC I took off.
Now I know the difference between the 67 and 68-72 MC's.
Thanks gentlemen for chiming in and trying to help.
