Rim Size

Post by skeeterg49 »

Hey Guys, I just searched the forum but couldn't find an answer to my question. I have a 1972 F-250 4x4 with a Dana 44 front and Dana 60 non-limited slip rear. The original spec. sheet from Ford said the truck came with 9.5 x 16.5-8TT tires. I don't have the original tires or rims but would like to know if 16" rims and tires would fit on my truck. I can't seem to locate too many 16.5" rims on the market. Sorry if this question has been asked and answered. Thanks for any information.

were the 16.5's a split rim in 72? butto answer your question i think a smaller rim would fit as long as it bolts up. you probably have what is it 8 lugs? i'm not much on 3/4 tons. i've never took the hub caps off of mine yet.

I don't know if the 16.5's were split or not. The rims on the truck were on there when I bought it. Yes I do have the 8-lug pattern. I forgot to mention that the Dana 44 in the front is the Heavy Duty model. Thanks for the reply

Go with the 16". You'll have a lot more options for tires. The 8 lug wheels should all be the same pattern.

16's will work just fine.

Make sure to use a 16 in rim and tire combo.

I know 16's will not work on 16.5 rims.

Hey, nice to be back, I've not been a participant for a while....yeah, I say go with the 16's....I have a 67 that had the original split rims and when they got worn this time, I decided to go with radials...the junkyard I went to had a 68 with 16.5's on it, but my original split rims were 16's, and I found a 72 dodge 4X4 with a real nice set of 16" white 8-lugs, so I just went with those, they fit fine....and just to make sure, I tried slapping on a ford hubcap from another vehicle on one of the dodge wheels before I bought them and it fit fine (the junk guy said they wouldnt).....ok, so now I'm "polluted"...hey, theyre just wheels, they'll come right off and if I ever wanted to be original for any reason, I kept the old split-rims :D

The old split rims were 16".

If you go the used wheel route, make sure they are off a Ford or Dodge, the Chevy steel wheels have a smaller center hole and won't fit. All aftermarket wheels incorporate the larger center hole so they fit all.

Our 8 luggers have 6.5 inch spacing on the lugs. That will give you many options. I dont think the newer Ford truck rims will work because they a 177mm spacing or somthing like that. Damn metric system!! :x

Yeah, if you go with Ford truck wheels you're good up to '98.

Thanks for all of the info. guys! That's why I love this site. I know I don't have many posts but I'm always on here reading and learning all I can from you guys. Who knows, maybe Dodge contracted Ford to make rims for their trucks just to have something of value on them. Thanks again. Billy

My 70F250 4X4 did not have split rims. I am using Fords steel 16.5's but I needed to set up a spare and ended up buying American Racing Outlaw II's. Very nice!
