Re-Drilling Modern 8x 170mm rims for our trucks

Post by pdr1966 »

I have been looking to replace my 16.5 wheels and tires, and am having trouble finding suitable 8 x 6.5" BC 16'" rims for my truck.
There seams to be alot more around, less expensively in the 8 x 170 bolt pattern so:
What do you guys think of this idea:
I make a 'plug' fixture which centers on the clearance hole, and maybe has one bolt hole or two to fasten it in place securely on the 170 circle, then I carefully drill out my 'fixture' to make a 6.5" bolt circle - and basically accurately re-drill the wheel for the 6.5" circle between the 170's holes.
Then the centercaps will cover it all up.

That sounds like a bit of work, it would probably be doable but I think you'd probably be better off getting one with the 8x6.5 pattern in the first place then you don't have to worry about the guess work in drilling out the right pattern and it will definitely save you some time. I posted in another thread that Cragars were great wheels for the 8x6.5 lug pattern, not only do they have the right pattern but they have the same spec. center bore as the oe wheels did, and their wheels start at around $45 which isn't a bad price. I'd check Summit and the classifieds, you'll find that the biggest problem with getting wheels for your truck is not the bolt pattern but the center bore, your truck needs wheels with a 5.15 center bore to clear. :2cents:

If you drill another set of holes for the lugs, you're going to weaken the wheels to the point that I would be afraid to drive it!!!

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

Why not just find some 8x6.5 wheels? They are all over in 16" and 16.5". Try Craigslist. At worst, order some Soft-8s from Summit.

8X6.5 is common to dodge and chevy trucks so they must be fairly common?? I bought a set of rims for my 1991 F-250, they were advertised as "dodge rims"

It was THE 8-lug pattern for a long time. Ford, Dodge, Chevy, International. 8x170mm is the oddball, newschool pattern and is a solution looking for a problem.
