Bad tires?

Post by OldRedFord »

I put my 31s I had traded for a year ago on my truck over the weekend. I noticed a few spots in the sidewalls of three of the tires i had not noticed before.

First pic is a nick in one of the sidewalls, second is a cut in one (cant tell how deep, but not deep enough to be loosing air) last is a nick in a sidewall that is through one layer of rubber.

I know that the tire in the last pic is a safe bet to replace, but what about the other two?

Goodyear just wanted to sell me new tires. These have over half a penny's worth of tread left yet.

I'd run the first two, maybe the last one.
I have ran some pretty bad tires before, but they don't last long in rocks and its not like im going to replace a tire after every desert run.
It's not the safest thing to do of course. It's up to you, if you want to take the bit of risk of a blowout then go for it.

one possibility that you could try for a temporary fix until you run the tread down alot is to get some clear finger nail polish and that will seal up the tears really good. i wound this out from my days as an installer at Circuit City. we would put the polish on cracked subs and they would just like new.

I have seen white wall tires & white letter tires chewed up all to crap from curb rash. Some so bad they looked like the old timey wide white walls. Im going to say they are ok to run, but use your best judgement. Most tire shops will tell you if it aint leaking, it aint hurt. Least around here they do.

If your worried about the sidewall, just look at how some folks make the "wide" white walls. lol If it will take being wore down with a grinder, a little scuff should be no problem.

to be completely safe at highway speeds replace them. for daily driving around town they will be ok for awhile. you coudl put tubes in them if they start to leak. but they arent gonign to get any better. if they start to lose air your done for.

Im going to replace the last one for sure, and then the one with the cut in it. I wish i could just get 4 new tires, but can only afford 1 or 2 right now. :(
