removing steering linkage from knuckle

Post by 1971ford »

I can't get the damn steering linkage off of the knucle on my '71 f250 (with disc brakes).
I have flipped the nut over on the threads and pounded the sh!t of the them and i have also done the same with a pickle fork and a sledge. What is the truck? It's making me mad.
Before all this i pb blasted them as well.

Take your BFH and hit the knuckle on the outside of where the tapered linkage goes through, as if trying to collapse the tapered hole.

Pickle forks tend to slightly pry sideways, which might not be best if the pieces are stuck together. I've always had really good luck with an actual tierod separator, since they work in a straight linear line. I keep this in my toolbox and use it extensively when I'm out junkyarding....it's never failed me nor messed up the threads.

I have a puller just like that.
I think we broke it using it on something else though. I'll have to check!

You could try putting a torch on the knuckle to expand the metal just a little bit.

I got it out, I just had to jamb the pickle fork as hard is i could into it, and then i smacked on the side of the knuckle a million times. It got very old really quick and i had to do it tons of times, it was rediculous. But they did come out.

one of my favorite and very easy ways to do it. is to use a muffler gun and a pickle fork adapter for the gun. buzz buzz and it pops right apart.
