I did search and didnt find what i was looking for ...so here it goes.
I want to strip my 71 to bare metal and leave it that way. I think it looks cool. I have seen a few pics on here of a lowered truck that is bare and I like it.
Now what to do after the paint is off? clear coat? mineral oil? or some other option? I realy dont know how to protect the meatal after it is stripped. Any suugestions or instructions?

where are these pics? i would liek to see them. i doubt they would be a stainless steel. but that is what comes to mind. it would have to be some sort of heavy duty clear coat.

I think he must be referring to Marz's truck. I think you could leave it bare metal as long as you don't let it get wet, operate it in areas of high humidity or (this is important) EVER touch it with bare hands. Otherwise, be prepared to re-sand it frequently.

Then again, you might try that goop designed for use on freshly polished aluminum.

It would have to be top coated with something. When I was stripping parts of my truck getting ready to paint it I would strip part of it and prime it. If I didn't prime it fast enough and it got the least bit humid it would flash rust right in front of my eyes. No kidding! I could sit there and watch rust form right in front of my eyes. So, there is no way you can leave it bare metal without some kind of topcoat.

I've been reading up on Soda Blasting. Supposedly after you soda blast to bare metal it leaves a protective coating that will keep it from rusting for some time. Amount of time varies with humidity, rain etc...

yes marz's truck is bare metal and he live in cali. also he sprays wd40 on it on a regular bases he does have issue with surface rust.

Wow. That would last a week in the 90% summer time humidity in Oklahoma. It would flash rust over night.

I bet if you put a heavy clear coat on it it would be ok.

I know each to his own, but I'd most definitely go with a clear-coat before I'd hit it with a silicone product like WD-40. He just has to hope that he never decides to change his mind and want to paint it, 'cause he ain't NEVER gonna get paint to stick to that...ever. The silicone will embed itself to the point where it'll be next to impossible to remove. Many body shops won't touch a vehicle where it's obvious that something like WD-40 or ArmourAll has gotten onto the paint.

Do some research into a flat clear-coat, or adding a flattening agent to regular clear-coat.

Even if you clear it, it will surface rust. You could simulate this look with paint. Check out HOK paints, they have some that are metal and look great. In fact, they have an aluminum paint they have painted entire cars with, very unique looking. The only all aluminum bodied F100, just like the shelby.

Im agree with not useing WD40 on bare metal,I made the mistake of putting WD40 on a crankshaft that i just got from a machine shop and sprayed WD40 on it because it was going to be a week or so before i built the motor and 7 day later the crank was covered with surfice rust,had to take it back to the machine shop and have the crank repolished.when i take the crank in to the shop the owner just says im not the first person to make that mistake :nono:

Here is my truck in bare metal, it's been 5 months since I spayed it with wd-40 so i'll be doing that soon cause the rain is coming.

I know this is a old post, but I write Marz asking what a good sealer is before the clear coat? And the best way to strip the whole truck? Just curious???? :fr:

The best way is soda blasting... it doesn't harm chrome or rubbers.

Sealer? .. the sealer you use should be the same brand as the primers and top coats.

Or are you asking whether sealer is sprayed over bare metal before the clear. In this case, it would be clear right over the bare metal.

There is a product on the market called "Sharkhide". It is applied over bare metal and lasts a loooooong time. Moreso than applying WD-40 or other oil-based product.
