I need help.......LOL
Ok, with out going inot all the details and all the problems I have had the past few days....... due to my daughter running her 72 F100 out of fuel, here is my question. I have been trying to get the truck to start. I have poured a small amount, and I mean small into the carb to get it firing in order to draw fuel to the carb....now I am having fuel "squirting" out of what I believe to be the vent tube on the carb, just in front of the choke valves. is this normal? is it flooded? what causes this? how do I get it to stop squirting .....I am not a mechanic.......am mechanically inclined, but have limited knowledge. any help would be appreciated

Vent tubes are exactly what you said they are. They expose the fuel bowl to atmospheric pressure so that the vacuum in the venturi can draw fuel out of the bowl. These vent tubes are direct lines into the float bowl.
If fuel is spurting out of them (not an uncommon problem actually) it means that the needle valve is not stoping fuel flow from the pump.
But it also means that the pump and lines ARE working!
Fix?
Hard way and easy way. . . .
Hard way - rebuild the carb with a new needle and seat
Easy way - (and should be tried first) Assume that the needle/seat is not sealing because a small bit of crud was sucked into the carb from the empty tank. You can work the crud out ot the way by TAPPING on the body of the carb.
I generally hold a screwdriver by the tip and bang the carb with the plastic handle. (hit the carb with metal and it could crack)
You can even hit it while it is running (and bubbling over) the vibrations SHOULD HOPEFULLY dislodge the crud and allow the needle/seat to seal again.
By hitting with plastic there should be no sparks around the gasoline

If this is the autolite carb, I believe you can take the top of the carb off with it still mounted on the engine and pull out the needle and seat and clean it up. hope that helps

ok, it was a Holley card....and amazingly enough, with a little tapping, it stopped squirting fuel, and fired right up.....thank you so much for your help.......

Better find out how the crud got to the carb, check your fuel filter or add one to prevent future problems....

Carbs get pissy with you when you run them out of gas
. Just like the in-tank fuel pumps. They get mad & just go out on you !!

There was/is probably trash/rust/crud in the bottom of the tank that came out with the last bit of fuel.
I would advise changing the fuel filter and admonishing your daughter to try not to let it get below about 1/8 tank.
