4wd oil pan dipstick tube

Post by fordman »

the dip stick tube in my 4wd oil pan is loose as a goose. it wont do anything but flop around. someone please give me a total description of how this is suppose to not leak. or what could be wrong. does it snap in or something. it didnt look like it was suupose to sanp in. it looked more like it was suppsoe to wedge into the pan guide.

Look under the grease and dirt, there should be a flare nut . like a brake or gas line.

Also there should be a bracket bolted to the exhaust manifold .
If its been loose for awhile it could have loosened or broke at the bottom.

no nut all the grease and dirt is gone. this one just slides into the pan opening it has four rivets holding the pan bracket to the pan.

i had another thought the other day. why couldnt i take and use a punch or something to enlarge it a slight to make it fit better. and then put rtv around it when i put it back in. what are your opinions?

don't think your be able to expand it up high enough to seal it.. get the oil out of the pan, clean the hole and the tube real good with carb cleaner. use a gun cleaning brush to scrub the I.D. of the hole good. cover something smaller than the ID of the hole with "THE RIGHT STUFF" using it to coat the i.D. of the hole. coat the O.D. of the tube, push it in and wipe the extra with you finger pushing it in toward the hole. Bolt it in place and let it sit overnight. There's no reason that should leak.

I had a similar problem with my 360 but it was tight enough to use black rtv rubber. Since yours is pretty loose, epoxy would work. Clean the surface and apply the epoxy around the area where the dipstick tube connects to the oil pan. JB weld in the tubes would probably work but they also make a thicker epoxy called Water Weld. It's about an inch in diameter with the hardener in the middle. You cut off a slice and kneed it until it's a solid color. It has the consistency of putty and sets up hard in about 5 minutes. Either should seal the leak but if there is still some leakage you could put RTV rubber over that.

Water Weld works great on a number of different type of leaks. I used it to temperarely fix a crack in a rad. tank where it was soddered to the outlet fitting.
