questions for the 429/460 folks

Post by Eric L »

I'm in the early planning stages of a '67 Crewcab build. Thinking about using one of my 460's, but was wondering if the swap presents problems with the power brake booster vs. valve cover. My tape measure says it should be fine with stock type valve covers... but what if I tried some 'o them fancy tall aluminum jobs?

any suggestions on a real high quality set of shorty headers? I was thinking of looking at something like these http://www.sandersonheaders.com/product ... ucts_id=89. I'm not totally committed to the idea of headers, or the 460 for that matter.. just trying to plan things out.

This is a 4x4

Thanks
Eric

the dentside trucks used small boosters or inverted the brake booster brakets to let the booster sit up higher i think.

There are at least two different diameter of brake boosters also. I used one from a 72 F250 and I think it is the smaller diameter. I have a couple of inches between the booster and valve cover but I also have stock valve covers.

Im running the tall Ford Motorsports aluminium valve covers on mine but im not running power breaks. There is still lots of room around them, i dont think it would be much of a prob..

I have a '67 standard cab and I run the Ford motorsport SVO tall aluminum valve covers and
high rise Weiand intake on a 460 and they have enough clearance under the hood .

Thanks guys, fordman's post gave me an Idea that I haven't gotten to check out yet.. gotta go find a dent to look at, and also snoop around my '67... maybe its possible to flip the booster/bracket over for more clearance. :hmm:

I'm really on the fence on the engine choice.. part of me really wants an FE, but the $$ cost per cubic inch advantage with a 460 is hard to ignore.

Truck will be used as a tow rig 80% of the time, back-up kid hauler 20%. Trailer wt. in excess of 10K (more like 20K if I ever get the trailer I want), mountain driving... NP435 with a Ranger OD. 4.10 and 315/75R16's

I have a set of tal ford racing valve covers and they will NOT fit with the booster I have. I dont know if I have the bigger booster or not. I pulled it from a 73 but im sure it had been replaced sometime over the last 30+ yrs. I intend to go with hydroboost to clear the valve covers. sounds stupid but I really like these valve covers and have heard good about hydroboost
