Cold start, won't idle

Post by spence v »

I have a 71 with a 302 and the 2bbl Motorcraft carb.

Starting the truck cold, it turns and fires up just fine, but it will die immediately unless I rev it up and keep it going for a few minutes.

From what I've been able to gather from this forum, I have an electric choke. Is this the problem? Can it be adjusted or does it need replaced?
I also read about a fast idle cam, but I don't know how it works or if I have one.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Just trying to get this truck on the road and driving well again. Thanks, Spence.

my 67 352 with a 4 barrel and a manual choke is that way to. It will start right up even at 22 degres but i have to fast idle it with the gas pedal for a few minutes.... i figure if im in enough of a hurry that i cant wait i take the fuel injected truck.

it is a choke setting but i dont know how to fix that yet

On the Pass. side of you carb. there should be a ajustment screw just under your choke pull off housing the screw head should be facing back toward the fire wall. it should be a flat head adjust this screw in to rase you high idle. you should take about a 1/2 turn at a time and start you motor each half turn until the idle you desire is achieved. after few minute you should be able to hit the gas an kick the idle back down after the engine is warmed up.

It mght not hurt to spray all the choke linkage and fast idle cam with carb cleaner, They get gummed up and don't work properly.

I have the same truck with the same problem. I just got the truck last week and havent had time to mess with it. My 68 is manual choke. I think I prefer the manual choke

I did soak all of the linkage a few times with PB blaster. I didn't really notice a difference until I did a basic tune-up: plugs, wires, rotor and cap.
Pumped the gas a couple times and fired right up and idled fine.
I went ahead and pulled the carb yesterday anyway and rebuilt it. Need to finish up and reinstall it later today.

Thanks again for all the help, Spence
