390 a/c

Post by 68rookie »

My mechanic is trying to get my A/C system up and running on my 68 f100. It's 2wd with a 390 in it. He charged the system and said when he tried to run it that it was arcing on the backside of the compressor. He said I need a new a/c compressor clutch switch. I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for and was wondering where I could find such an animal if I can. Thanks in advance.

Arcing on the back of the compressor? Does he mean the rear of the clutch? The clutch gets it's power through a single wire, and grounds through the mount and engine.
LMC sells a brush assembly for the factory A/C unit:

They also sell a temp control switch on the same page. Might double check which one you need.

PS: How did that dual exhaust system work out for you? I was wondering about that earlier today!

I know he's put the system on but I've not heard it yet. It looks good, might get me some chrome tips to fancy it up a little. I did see what you are talking about in LMC. NPD had it too and I believe it was Mac's or Carpenter too. I've got to many catalogs! How are things up north? Talking like maybe a little snow this weekend

without doing a bunch of pictures and a whole entire wrtie up. basicly the clutch has magnets (field coil) inside of it. first picture. the clutch activation switch is in picture #2 i am unsure about arcing. that tells me it has a bare wire grounding out. i am unsure of his description.

Does it have the clutch that uses external brushes?

I'm not sure, but if it does I've seen those for sale in several vendor catalogs. I'll try to get into see him today and look at the truck too.

There were two types of clutches used on these trucks.

One had a stationary coil like the one shown in Fordman's example.

The other type had a rotating coil that was energized by the brush assembly that mounts on the front of the compressor.

My guess is that you have the second type, and that the arcing is coming from where the brush assembly contacts the clutch.

You can use either type, as either will work on both York and Tecumseh compressors. The only requirement is that the groove in the pulley has to align properly with the other pulleys. I personally like the one with the stationary field coil, because there are no moving parts, other than the bearings, to wear out.

It ended up being the brush assembly that some you were talking about.
