Oil Pump Pressure??

Post by FordTruck »

I'm getting ready to pull my 302 in the 70 and put an NP435 on the back and while I had it out I was toying with the idea of upgrading the oil pump. The olny things I'm wondering about is the motor needs valve seals becasue it blows some white smoke and has a little blow by also. Will upgrading the oil pump make that worse until I get around to changing the seals? Also my dad said a hi-po one might cause oil to leak around the rings. The olny reason I'm wanting a hi-po over stock is becasue someday I plan to upgrade the valve train and do a 4bbl and cam swap on it.

You really don't need anything more than a stock oil pump. The blow by is due to bad rings, the smoke when you start it is from valve seals, I wouldn't put a high volumn pump in it. It want really help with oil pressure because bearing clearence is where you get your oil pressure from.
For now I would replace the valve seals, oil pump,(stock) and timing chain and you should be good for a long while. Even with the upgrades you plan to do doesn't require nothing more than a stock oilpump.;)

I agree, At this point all I would do is throw on a new OEM pump. I think you will be fine with the stock pump even with the upgrades you mentioned.

hi vol oil pumps will pump to much oil. and it will all go to the top end. that is why you must use a holley jet in the rocker shafte to keep all of the oil from going to the top end when a large vol pump is installed. it sounds like it would hurt you more than it would help you.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???
